About the Artist

Mike Stanko, a lifelong Streamer, graduated Central High in 1973. He has been exhibiting his unique and whimsical art since 1997. From his home in Valley Stream to the world beyond, he finds endless inspiration in the iconic, the familiar, and the mundane—sunflowers, beach scenes, even a grilled cheese sandwich! Each painting is created with bright fields of color in his signature eye-catching style. Stanko’s paintings are buoyant and optimistic, reflective of his colorful outlook on the world around him, and sprinkled with wit and fun. 

Mike's work has been featured in solo shows and group exhibitions at the Mills Pond Gallery in St. James, Elaine Benson Gallery in Bridgehampton, Mistretta Gallery in Locust Valley, Empire State Building in New York City, Windsor Whip Works Art Center near Binghamton, Ripe Art Gallery in Huntington, and the Reboli Center for Art and History in Stony Brook. Stanko has appeared in media interviews, and his work has been featured on album and book covers and in magazines. His paintings are included in Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center's art collection, as well as in many private collections. Recent Exhibition in Valley Stream
In May 2022, the Historical Society hosted a three-day exhibit (click here to see invitation) of Mike's finest canvases. Stanko Art: from Coney Island to Montauk featured over 30 pieces of original artwork. Greetings from Valley Stream was created so that folks, after viewing his work, could walk away with a tangible reminder of their hometown. Art should be accessible to all—even if it comes in the form of humble postcards!

Reunion Sales
The Historical Society has stepped up their outreach and fundraising game—we sold Central High mugs (scroll down to see them) at a reunion this past winter. Greetings from Valley Stream is another great memento we'd like to make available at these special events. A PayPal button for reunions would accept online orders and shipping charges would NOT apply. The pre-paid postcards would be delivered to the reunion site and distributed during the first half-hour of the evening. For those who didn't pre-order, but wish they had, extras would be on hand. The Historical Society also offers docent-guided tours of the Restoration during reunion weekends. If your class is interested in the postcards, tours, or both, please email vshistorical@gmail.com.
