"Every year During Memorial Day Weekend, I am reminded of a quote by Abraham Lincoln…..Our 16th President said:

“I like to see a man proud of the place in which he lives.  I like to see a man live so that his place will be proud of him.”

In Valley Stream, I can assure you that we are proud of all of our Servicemen and women. We are proud of our veterans and all the members of our armed forces currently serving this great country. And we are particularly proud of all the persons remembered here today who have made the supreme sacrifice, so that we could live in freedom. Rest assured that thanks in large part to the VFW, the American Legion, their friends and families, and all of you here today, that their names will live on and their memories will not be forgotten.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the start of World War One. It was supposed to be the war to end all wars, but of course it wasn’t, and our vigilance continues to this day. And so we must come here each memorial day to remember the 9 Valley Streamers who perished in that great and terrible war and every defense of liberty since.

I must take a moment to draw your attention to this newly refurbished Veteran’s Memorial Plaza; that we are all standing on. This site is a lasting tribute to all of our armed forces, and a memorial to all of those Valley Streamers who gave their lives for this great country.

Through the efforts and monetary support of the American Legion, The VFW, and the Incorporated Village of Valley Stream; The Mayors committee on Veterans Affairs was able to recommend much needed improvements for this memorial. Due in large part to the hard work and skill of a dedicated work force; we now have the beautiful plaza for all to see.

I realize that a parade is nice, and a holiday weekend is a great treat. I know that picnics and the mall will fill much of our time this weekend. But we must remember that we pause here at this monument today to pay tribute to our fallen heroes.

I would like to ask everyone that at some point today, when our weekend activities are swirling around us…please take a moment to Stop---Stop and Think about what today stands for and thank a Veteran - past or present, living or deceased for giving us the opportunity to live freely in these Great United States.

On behalf of Deputy Mayor Clavin Higgins, Trustee Thomas, Trustee Grasso, Trustee Tufarelli, Judge Bogle, and every resident of the village of Valley Stream, we want to thank you for honoring this village and our country by attending and participating in this service here today.

I want to extend my warmest wishes for a safe and happy Memorial Day. Please enjoy the remainder of your day.

God Bless America."
